A spring quilt retreat at Brentwood on the Beach, a B&B on the shores of Lake Huron, just up from Grand Bend. This year, the lake was still frozen, so walks on the beach were brisk and chilly. It’s kind of neat how the waves and sand seem to mess into a frozen lump at the shore — you can’t tell where the lake starts and the shore stops. It’s all just frozen together.
One nice thing about being on retreat is being inspired by projects other quilters are working on. My friend Bonnie was busy turning different coloured Friendship Star blocks into a rainbowy quilt. Cool!
Several of us were working on a mystery quilt, that turned out to be a Rolling Stone pattern. I did mine using primitives that I picked up on sale at a nearby quilt shop. Another quilter, Leslie, made hers with rainbow colours on a black background, for a completely different look.
Another quilter, Doreen, who is in her eighties, was working on this amazing handpieced hexagon quilt. Each of her hexes is quite small. I just can’t comprehend the amount of time she has put into piecing this quilt. It is truly a passion for her.
